The Two Types of Water Heater
Two main types of water heater are available for your house: Traditional and Tankless.
Traditional water heaters feature a large tank containing thick insulation and electrical heating elements. Once installed, cold water is pumped into the tank through a tube. There, the heating elements heat the water up until it’s at a temperature of roughly 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The water must stay hot, otherwise bacteria and other harmful substances could grow inside the tank. Once the water is hot, the insulation keeps it at the proper temperature. When you turn on a hot water faucet, water is pumped from the tank through your faucet for you to enjoy.
Tankless water heaters work completely differently. Instead of keeping water hot at all times, a tankless heater heats the water right when you need it. When you turn on a hot water faucet, cold water is pumped through your water heater, heated a heating element powered by propane or natural gas, and then delivered straight to your faucet.
Traditional water heaters are much more common, especially in areas where electrical heating systems are preferred.
How Do Tankless Water Heaters Work?
Standard water heaters don’t just heat your water for you. They hold the water in place until you need it in other parts of your house. In each unit, a supply pipe fills the tank with cold water, a heating element heats it, and insulation makes sure it stays warm. Then, another pipe carries it away whenever a hot water faucet or another appropriate device is turned on. Because the heating element often stays on to some extent, this can cost you a bit of extra money.
Tankless heaters don’t store hot water. Instead, they heat cold water on demand, right when you need it. This means you can get the hot water you need, right when you need it, without having to heat water you won’t be using for a while.
